Question:   Does it go in the dishwasher?
Answer:   I know this is not a direct answer to your question, but I as a medical professional I must add that you must never wash anything exposed to animal or human waste in your dishwasher or in any sink or in any vessel in which you clean the dishes, glasses, cups, and utensils with which you eat and drink. The risk of infectious disease is simply too great.

Question:  Does the metal go all the way into the handle ?
Answer: Well, Yes and No. The metal goes "into" the handle but it's just a 2" x 1/2" stub that is pressure fitted into what is essentially a hollow plastic handle. You asked, "all the way" which implies all the way through the handle. So, no. This is basically a plastic handle and a bit of metal is wedged into it. The plastic is very hard and stiff, but still plastic. My guess is that it might fatigue and crack over time. See my review and photos.

Question:  I want a scooper that picks up smaller clumps. Will this one retain those annoying small bits ? Already have a metal one for large clumps.
Answer: This one picks up both large and small clumps. There are still always a few pieces small enough that they fall through, but this scoop picks up more and smaller clumps than any other I've tried.
